To develop a training for Floodplain Managers on 2D Modeling.

The Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) has been working on the development of 2D Modeling informational materials for the past few years. As part of the development process, staff have interviewed communities about their experiences with FIRMs developed using 2D models. No communities interviewed fully understood the information received without engaging professional engineers, and no information or training was provided during any of the mapping meetings throughout the mapping processes.

At the same time as these discoveries were made during the research process, the issue of a lack of training around 2D modeling for local floodplain management came up as a need during a meeting of the 2024 ASFPM Board of Directors. With this need echoing in multiple parallel conversations, it became obvious that more extensive training on 2D Modeling for Floodplain Administrators was needed to accompany ASFPM related outreach materials and bring floodplain managers up to speed on how to use new FIRMs developed using 2D modeling.
