The Technical Mapping Advisory Council (TMAC) is a federal advisory council established to review and make recommendations to FEMA on matters related to the national flood mapping program. TMAC members include a broad group of representatives from federal, state, local and private sector organizations. They review national flood mapping activities and prepare recommendations for FEMA to consider. Since 2015, the Council has issued numerous reports that include over 100 recommendations on topics such as climate sciences, resiliency efforts, and equity policy.
TMAC’s efforts in 2023 revolved around considering whether changes to longstanding definitions and processes – the SFHA and procedures for areas in the floodplain when fill is placed or grading occurs - were warranted. In 2023 work also included investigating how to help communities overcome the administrative and technical challenges of implementing 2-dimensional hydrologic and hydraulic modeling for regulatory floodplain management purposes. The latest topic(s) being investigated and assessed in 2024 will also be discussed.
This webinar will provide information on the origins, responsibilities and impact of the Technical Mapping Advisory Council, the 2023 recommendations and what is planned for 2024.
