CTP Webinar: Hydrology – Learning the Basics
Locations: CTP Information Exchange Webinar
Time: Wednesday, Aug 27, 2025, 1:00 PM - Wednesday, Aug 27, 2025, 2:30 PM
Details:

webinar imageHydrology and hydraulics (H&H) are two foundational engineering components used to produce flood hazard mapping. Hydrology focuses on estimating the amount of water generated during a flood event, while hydraulics uses that information to determine how high the floodwaters will rise in a watershed. These flood elevations are then used to define the area that will be inundated. Of the two, hydrology often presents the greatest challenge and carries the most uncertainty.

This webinar will introduce the fundamentals of hydrologic modeling and its role in flood hazard mapping. We’ll explore a range of methods for estimating flood flows from USGS regression equations to more complex engineering models.
